J, M and G Lines See 2011 Boost in Ridership

The lines, which run through Bed-Stuy, can credit new residents and businesses for the surge in ridership.

Subway ridership was up 2.3 percent in 2011, with city residents and tourists taking 1.64 billion trips, the highest of any year since 1950, says WNYC.

Lines that go through Bed-Stuy, like the J and the G lines, got a big boost in ridership, says the MTA’s report. While the J’s popularity is attributed to new residents, as well as draws from nightlife and businesses opening along the route, the 10 percent rise in G ridership is in part due to construction closing nearby stations, says WNYC.

The M train had it’s best year in 2011, with MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz telling WNYC: "That's due to the continuing effect of the June 2010 service changes when we rerouted the M line via 6th Ave. into Manhattan and Queens Blvd in Queens.”

WNYC says that the new M train link between Bed-Stuy and lower Manhattan was a boon for both areas, as it was previously much tougher to get between certain parts of each neighborhood.
