WHY GO: From New York Times-- DANNY MIXON is a pianist who began making an impression in the late 1960's when he was a teen-ager in Brooklyn, playing jazz in a manner that showed a variety of influences, including a strong feeling for Erroll Garner. WHEN/WHERE: Friday, November 23 – Saturday, November 24, 9:00 p.m., Brooklyn Academy of Music, BAMCafe
WHY GO: Indonesian monkey chanting, Mongolian throat singing, and Balinese body popping are just a few tricks that Akim Funk Buddha has embraced as a means of redefining hip-hop. He continues that tradition with another Hip-Hop Holiday weekend at BAMcafé Live. On Friday, November 23, Akim toes the fringes of the genre with help from Calvin Booker aka DJ Boogie, Swiss Chris on traps and electronic drums, MCs from the Urban Jedi League, and others. On Saturday, November 24, Akim presents his Urban Orchestra, merging Balinese kecak, Japanese kagaku music, and other genres with tight rhyming, beatboxing, and a futuristic soul train that only Funk Buddha could engineer.
