Get Out: Keziah Jones, Q-Tip and Family Day in Von King Park

WHY GO: Originally from Nigeria, singer/songwriter/guitarist, Keziah Jones burst on the scene in 1993 with his first album, Blue Funk is a Fact which included Rhythm Is Love, a single that became a worldwide hit and exhibited many of the musical directions that Jones would take during his career, from blues to funk via rock, pop and Afrobeat. Based in Brooklyn, while keeping up his Lagos-Paris-London shuttle trips, Keziah Jones has toured around the world. Jones covered U2’s One on the compilation In The Name of Love: Africa Celebrates U2, he has also worked with Les Nubian and Amadou and Miriam. His fourth studio album, Nigerian Wood, was released in 2007.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, emerging artist Sophia Urista has been seen all around New York brandishing her unique blend of soul, blues and rock and roll at venues such as Sugar Bar and Le Poisson Rouge. The Brooklyn-based artist cites Tina Turner, Bjork, Etta James and Janis Joplin as influences.

WHAT: Jefferson Avenue TNT Block Association Annual Block Party

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, July 16, 12:00pm – 7:00pm, Jefferson Avenue, between Throop and Tompkins

WHY GO: Join the Jefferson Avenue TNT Block Association for its annual block party, as they celebrate 125 years and the co-naming ceremony of a portion of the block after the late Assemblyman . This co-naming ceremony will take place at 3:00pm. Attending the ceremony will be local and national elected officials. There will be a live DJ, food, dessert, vendors and children’s games. Rain or shine!

WHAT: First Annual Bottomless Coffee Party

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, July 17, from 11:30am – 2:00pm,  French Press, 505 Franklin Avenue

WHY GO:  Caffeinate with the ones you love and join for its first annual Bottomless Coffee Party.  $10 get you bottomless French press coffee and two cookies; $20 gets you bottomless French press coffee or Espresso and one baked croissant sandwich (your choice of prosciutto, mozzarella and roasted tomatoes or ham and brie).  There will be a raffle at sign-in, and they will be giving away a free tote bag with any purchase.
