Get Out: Intl African Arts Festival, Steel Pulse and Pharoahe Monch

Fourth of July!!! There's so much hotness going on this weekend including the weather, it almost makes you want to stay in... But don't! Get Out!

WHEN/WHERE: July 1 – July 4, 10:00am – 10:00pm, Commodore Barry Park, Park Ave, Navy St & Flushing Ave, Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: The International African Arts Festival has become a mainstay tradition in Brooklyn and for some, the only way you should spend your 4th of July weekend! The festival features hundreds of vendors selling arts of African Diaspora. There is an abundant of music, dance, performances and food. Big fun!

WHEN/WHERE: July 1, 7:30pm, Prospect Park Bandshaell, 95 Prospect Park West, Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: Thirty years later Steel Pulse still rages the Rastafarian protest Reggae that they are known around the world for.Cost: $3 suggested donation

WHAT: Indepen-Dance Extravaganza!! With Sting International

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, July 2, 9:00pm – 4:00am, Union Square Ballroom, 7 Union Sq. West & 16th St., New York, NY

WHY GO: Housewerk w/Sting International & Don Welch-INDEPEN-DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA!! A house dance party for those of you who know what’s up!!!!! This is how you should spend your 4th of July weekend; in the party of good company and good music.

WHAT: Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, July 2, Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway

Why Go: The Vishnu exhibit offers a bevy of activities beginning at 5:00pm that highlight different cultural and creative expressions of Hindu culture.

5:00–7:00pm:Falu mixes contemporary rock with classical Indian music.

6:00pm: The Kathak Ensemble brings the art of Vishnu: Hinduism’s Blue-Skinned Savior to life with traditional Hindu dance and storytelling. Free tickets (330) available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

6:30–8:30pm: Discover Vishnu’s powerful avatars and sculpt one of your own. Free timed tickets (380) available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.

7:00pm: Curator of Asian Art Joan Cummins on the exhibition Vishnu: Hinduism’s Blue-Skinned Savior. Free tickets (30) available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

8:30–10:00pm: The RagaChitra Foundation band presents a concert of traditional Indian compositions on Vishnu.

COST: $4 beginning at 5 p.m.

 

WHAT: Pharoahe Monch & Baloji at Weeksville

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, July 2, 6:00pm, Weeksville Heritage Center, 1698 Bergen Street between Buffalo Avenue and Rochester Avenue

WHY GO: From his pioneering work as one half of the critically acclaimed alternative hip-hop duo Organized Konfusion, to his solo debut in 1999, Pharoah Monch has gained fans all over the world. Over the course of his career, Monch has collaborated with hip-hop's greatest and worked alongside a cast of artists as diverse as MosDef, Justin Timberlake, P. Diddy, Linkin Park, Wyclef Jean, Macy Gray, will.i.am, and Beck. Hot off the heels of his newest album, “W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)” via Duck Down Music/WAR Media, Monch will deliver a highly anticipated set. Set begins at 6:00 pm.
Congolese-Belgian singer/rapper Baloji and his band blend the lilting, melodious, guitar sounds of traditional Congolese music, rumba, Nigerian afro-funk, soukous, and what he calls retro-futuristic tradi-modern style with lyrics that weave socio-political stories about life in Kinshasa and Belgium.
