Get Out: Henna Art, Reggae Music and KIDflix in Fulton Park

The summer is winding, but that doesn't mean the fun is ending. Check out these activities for all ages and enjoy your nabe!

WHAT: Nigerian reggae star Majek Fashek

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, August 12, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm, Medgar Evers College Ampitheatre, 1650 Bedford Avenue, entrance on Montgomery Street

WHY GO: Majek first came to international attention in 1987 with the release of his tune, "Send Down The Rain." Majek is a cousin to the legendary Fela Kuti; African heir apparent to Bob Marley. Fashek is one of Africa's most popular reggae singers; esteemed as a prophet throughout the largest nation on the continent. This concert at the 14th annual edition of he Medgar Evers College Jazzy Jazz Festival is Majek's first ever in New York City.

WHAT: Soul Boy- Film Short/ KIDflix 2011

WHEN/WHERE: Every Friday in August 12, 7:00pm, Fulton Park (Stuyvesant Ave & Fulton / Harriet Tubman, "A" or "C" to Utica)

WHY GO: MoCADA partners with African Film Fest to bring the community of Bed-Stuy some of the latest film interpretations of the African Diaspora. This week is Violin Diva (Jazz, R&B, Soul) and the short film by Mwansa the Great Feature: Soul Boy. SPREAD THE WORD! Visit the KIDflix facebook page, "like" them, and tell everyone you know in the community where to be every Friday night in August.

HOW MUCH: Free

 

WHAT: Mehindi, the Art of Henna

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 2:00pm – 5:00pm, the Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway

WHY GO: Sandy Patangay, a practitioner of mehindi, the application of henna as body art, hosts a workshop for adults in which she shows visitors how to use henna and traditional designs to create temporary tattoos.

HOW MUCH: There is a $15 materials fee, and registration is required. Register at www.museumtix.com or at the Museum’s Visitor Center. A limited number of free tickets are reserved for Museum members on a first-come, first-served basis. Members should call (718) 501-6326 for tickets.

 

WHAT: Hattie Carthan Garden will host Cooking with Herbs "After Church" Farmers Market

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, August 14, from 2:30pm - 3:30pm, Hattie Carthan Garden, Lafayette and Marcy Avenues

WHY GO: Join the market garden for food, nutrition and discussion. Yonnette Fleming will lead a Cooking with Herbs demonstration. Yonnette Fleming is an urban farmer/ plant medicine practitioner who has taught herbalism in various communities and tended the extensive herb garden at Hattie Carthan for the last decade. Explore new flavors, recipes and ideas with a variety of garden grown herbs!  Free Health bucks will be distributed to those attending the cooking class in the marketplace.

WHAT: Carnevale

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, August 14, 7:00pm – 10:30pm, at the Galapagos Art Space, 16 Main Street, DUMBO, Bklyn

WHY GO: Carnevale is a performance-based fundraiser. There will be a mix musical and circus performances by some of NYC's finest talent, including cabaret singer Mira Stroika!  Circus-themed hors d'oeuvres will be served. From aerialists to fire spinners to cabaret and jazz performers, we believe this will be one of the most enchanting events of the summer! Carnevale was created with the intent to raise money for Arlekino Theater Troupe, a not-for-profit theater, music, art, and dance program for children in South Brooklyn ages 2-7 whose  parents emigrated from the Former Soviet Union.

HOW MUCH: $20 in advance, $25 at the door, $35 for VIP Seating
