WHY GO:  The award-winning documentary “Soul Food Junkie” was first screened at Restoration in mid-November, and was unforgettable as it was successful because it traced the history and love for soul food. It sparked an interesting discussion among community members of the obesity issues engulfing communities of color.

WHAT: Simplicity Wine Bar Presents “An Evening of Indie Film Screenings”

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, February 22, 8:00 p.m., Simplicity Wine Bar, 310 Malcolm X Blvd., Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: Students, professionals, friends and family are invited to an evening full of great conversation, beer/wine, and free screenings of locally made independent films

WHAT: MLK Day of Service and Community Quilting

WHEN/WHERE: February 23, 2:00 p.m., at Divas for Social Justice, 677 Lafayette Ave, Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: Each year we pause to reflect on his legacy of service and its meaning in today’s world. Join us to read together an excerpt from W.E.B. DuBois’s 1898 commencement address at Fisk University and talk about the personal and social importance of public service and civic engagement. In addition, join us for a free quilting class with Lewis Gallery and learn about the new programs for the Spring 2013. Refreshments will be served.

WHAT: Movement for the Urban Village Dance Company (MUV) presents Sankofa

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday February 23, 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 24, at 2:00 p.m. and 8pm; BAM Fisher/Fishman Space, 321 Ashland Place, Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: Under the direction of Shalewa Mackall, MUV performs original contemporary dance rooted in the techniques and traditions of the African Diaspora. SANKOFA features the premier of Calling Names, MUV’s first dance to include live music.  The “hauntingly beautiful” Calling Names explores issues of identity, lineage, the role of ancestors in personal evolution and the journey from personhood to spirithood. The score created and performed by Dunia Best and Tilishia Bradley that draws on Gospel, Jazz, Reggae and more!  In addition to the composers, the musical ensemble includes Dunia’s mother, Ahmondylla Best, noted shekere artist and music educator and Tilishia’s sister, Stephanie Bradley- Blue, an accomplished Gospel performer.

WHAT: 81st Pct. Presents “Video Game Day”

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, February 23, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Boys and Girls High School, 1700 Fulton Street, Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: The event will involve teams consisting of Police Officers and youth from the community. The teams will play some of today’s most popular sports games in an attempt to foster a positive relationship with the young people of the community.  Please support this event and feel free to send over any youth you may know that would like to take part in the event which is open to all young people from the community.
