Get Out: Brownstone Jazz, Julius Ceasar and a Cocktail Competition

The weather can't seem to make up its mind, hot or cold? But with all these choices for getting out this weekend, your mind is made easily: It's hot, hot, hot!

WHEN/WHERE: Wednesday, April 10 – Sunday, April 28, BAM Harvey Theatre, 30 LafayetteAve., Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: The world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Company returns to BAM with a new twist on Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Set in present-day Africa and featuring an all-black cast, this visionary production echoes recent regime struggles throughout the continent. The first production from the RSC's newly appointed artistic director Gregory Doran, this staging features sets by Michael Vale and live performances of contemporary West African music, fostering the contemporary resonance of this classic political thriller. According to The Guardian (UK), "...Doran's production gives the play's central debate about the necessary political murder a new immediacy."

WHAT: FAB (Fulton Area Businesses) Fridays Kick-Off

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, April 12, 4:00 p.m., Fowler Square, Fulton St. and Lafayette Ave. Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: Come and join in the fun at the first of 12 FREE concerts taking place along Fulton Street's outdoor public spaces. The events will run April thru Sept. From 4:00-6:00 are kids activities (ages 4 -12 years old) including art workshops led by local artists; children's book authors conducting hands-on chalk art projects; pop-up portable library; environmental projects; hula hooping fun, "urban croquet" and more, all free! And then, from 6:00-8:00 Jeff Newell's New-Trad Quartet, combining instruments and elements of a traditional New Orleans brass band with those of a modern jazz group A full schedule of performances for FAB FRIDAYS and Concerts for Kids, is listed below or can be found online here.

WHAT: The Dekalb Classic­

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, April 12, 2013, 5:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m., Dino's, Walters, Chez Oskar, Madiba Restaurant and Romans Restaurants along Dekalb Avenue in Fort Greene

WHY GO: Celebrate spring in ultimate fashion, with five of Dekalb Avenue’s best and busiest restaurants coming together for the first of an annual month-long cocktail competition called “The Dekalb Classic.” One bartender from Dino’s, Walter’s, Chez Oskar, Madiba Restaurant and Roman’s respectively, will each create their own signature cocktail, two of which will be voted best by patrons over the course of April. WHAT: The Boombox Exhibition

WHEN/WHERE: April 12 – June 9, 2013, House of Art Gallery, 408 Marcus Garvey Blvd., Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: The concept of the BoomBox Exhibition; presented by House of Art Gallery, is to demonstrate the influence of the boombox through various facets from the 70’s-mid 80’s; such as fashion, music and politics. The Boombox was an intrinsic part of incubating so much sonic New York history, in pulling together this study we'll see, live and embrace a device that was part of the fabric of the city.

WHAT: Brownstone Jazz Acoustic Sound Living Room Concert Series

WHEN/WHERE: April 12 – April 13, from 9:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m., Sankofa Aban Bed and Breakfast, 107 Macon Street, Bklyn, NY

WHY GO: This weekend’s series feature for Jazz Appreciation Month vocalist KATHRYN FARMER presenting songs from her fantastic hit CD, “Moondance” and more. Also performing are  MD Eric Lemons on Bass, James Weidman on piano and Vince Hector or Drums; on Saturday, Victor Jones on drums. Fish fry and other refreshments available. RSVP at 917-704-9237.
