WHY GO: Harvest on Hancock spans one of Brooklyn’s longest residential blocks. It supports the nonprofit Hancock Street Neighborhood Association. Get great deals on DVD players, air conditioners, appliances, books, electronics, clothing, artwork and more. Enjoy hot cider, hot cocoa, cakes, cookies, freshly baked bread and other treats. Help raise funds for Hancock Street Neighborhood Association #1's initiatives, including donations to PS 3 and great summer block parties!

WHAT: The State of the Solo Mommy Address (Where Does She Go From Here?)

WHY GO: This panel-led discussion will discuss, “Raising a boy to be a man,” “The backup plan,” “The Balancing Act,” “Financial Responsibility and Accountability,” “Child Support,” and “In Pursuit of Career and Entrepreneurship.” Panelists are Cathleen E. WHY GO: Intimate Reception with Edwidge Danticat 6:30-7:30pm, General event: 7:30-10:30pm -- Reading, Q&A with Edwidge Danticat, Video of Li, Li, Li! reading storybooks in Haiti's tent camps, entertainment, Haitian art & culture, refreshments & light food, autographed books for sale, silent auction. Li, Li, Li! is a not-for-profit literacy program reading storybooks out loud in Creole to more than 3,000 children per month in earthquake-victim tent camps in Haiti. The program promotes literacy, eases stress, and creates jobs for Haitians. Advisory Board member Edwidge Danticat is actively engaged in the Li, Li, Li! program and regularly participates in its storybook reading sessions in Haiti.

WHAT: Meet and Greet Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad, director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, October 23, 5:00pm, Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street, Skylight Gallery, 3rd floor

WHY GO: Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad is the author of The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime and the Making of Modern Urban America, published this January by Harvard University Press. Condemnation was selected by the San Francisco Chronicle as a top-ten title for Black History Month, and is recommended in the April issue of Ebony Magazine. Glenn Loury of Brown University says Condemnation “is the most significant work in the study of race and American society to have appeared in the past decade.”
