Why Go: The Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival continues into its second week! The Brooklyn jazz mixes different traditions of musical expressions, from hip hop, to blues, to gospel.  The audience is part of the presentation and is encouraged to get involved. Participate, enjoy, let the music move you. Eric Frazier's Jazz Jam Session, Rustik Lounge; Jazz Celebration to The East featuring Charles Tolliver Quartet, Brooklyn College; NEA Jazz Master Candido Camero's birthday jam with Arturo O'Farrill Quintet; Saron Crenshaw Quartet, Jazz966; Tribute to Thelonious Monk with Alan Jay Palmer and Rome Neal, Sistas' Place; Annual Virginia Day Musical Concert, Janes United Methodist Church; Steve Cromity Quartet, Two Steps Down and Monday Evening Jazz with Doug Carn Quartet.

What: Latin Fusion

Where/When: L.I.U. Brooklyn Campus, Kumble Theatre for the Performing Arts, April 8, 2011, 7:30 pm

Why Go: L.I.U. Brooklyn Campus Latinos Unidos presents: Latin Fusion, an annual concert celebrating the rich diverse rhythms and sounds of Latin America. This year's concert will feature local artists performing Bomba from Puerto Rico, authentic New York City salsa, the sounds of Afro-Cuba, and the exciting movements of Capoiera and Flamenco.

Price: $15, $10 for students with ID

 

What: Young Poets Read From ""

Where/When: Brooklyn Public Library -- Central Branch, Second Floor Meeting Room, Saturday, April 9, 2:00 pm

Why Go: April is National Poetry Month. Bring a poem to share. Celebrate the writing and publication of a book of poems, writing and art by young Brooklyn writers. "My Grandfather Had One Coat" is published by Angeli Rasbury in an effort to give voice to youth of African descent. Free books will be available to children ages 7-18 on a first-come, first-serve basis. This program is co-sponsored by African Voices. Please, no groups.

What: "Call Me Crazy:” Diary Of A Mad Social Worker

Where/When: L.I.U. Brooklyn Campus, Kumble Theatre for the Performing Arts, April 9, 8 pm; and April 10, 4 pm.

Why Go: After being assigned more work than she can handle, social worker Lewis has a nervous breakdown, tries to kill her boss and is committed for psychiatric observation. After being restrained, Lewis recalls her true-life experiences working with prostitutes, drug addicts and prisoners, portraying twenty-five different characters from pimps to menopausal women. Call Me Crazy…. A unique look at the highs and lows of working for peanuts while trying to save the world one poem at a time.
