Friends, Bed-Stuy Community Organize Fundraiser for Wendy McLein

Bed-Stuy business owner Wendy McLein was critically injured and her son, fatally injured, last month when a car jumped the curb and crashed into the building where they were standing

Community members and friends of Wendy McLein have organized a fundraiser for the Bed-Stuy business woman who remains in serious condition at Kings County Hospital, following a freak car accident that also left her 3-year-old son, Denim, fatally injured.

Wendy owns a lounge and another cafe, both on Bedford Avenue, and was in the process of putting the finishing touches on a new lounge and cabaret, Cafe Denim.

She and her son were badly injured when a piece of heavy scaffolding from a nearby construction site fell on the two victims, after a car suddenly jumped the curb at Church and Utica avenues in East Flatbush and crashed through a crowd of people waiting at a nearby bus stop.

Unfortunately, her son passed away from his injuries four days later. And Wendy remains in the hospital, still recovering from a brief coma, broken bones and other injuries.

On a website recently set up for Wendy, friends make a plea for donations that will help to pay for her escalating hospital bills:

"Through out the years Wendy has always been a helping hand in our community.  Extending her services and establishments to those in need, often without compensation. While Wendy remains in ICU, her financial obligations must be met. We are asking her friends, family and our community to donate and support Wendy's  cause!!!!"

Also this Saturday, friends of Wendy and other community members will hold a fundraiser for her at her Fulton Street Lounge, Cafe Denim.

WHAT: Fundraiser for Wendy McLein

WHEN: Saturday, April 20, 6:00 p.m. - 12:00 midnight

WHERE: Cafe Denim, 1114 Fulton Street (off of Franklin Avenue)
