Community Board 3 Meets

Minutes from the May CB3 meeting in Bedford-Stuyvesant

Community Board 3 held its monthly meeting Monday night. LPC's historic district designation, new guidelines kindergarten enrollment and two restaurants requesting letters of approval for liquor licenses were amongst the the evening's big topics.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF ELECTED OFFICIALS
      

  • Lee Church, from the office of Congressman Hakeem Jeffries: On Sat. May 18, open house for Central Brooklyn Office at Shirley Chisholm State Office Building, 55 Hanson Place 
  • Teen writing contest,  ages14-18, deadline is June 26; a Brooklyn Summer College Clinic at Borough Hall for young people who need more assistance who may have missed the deadlines to help them still enroll in college; on May 14 Block association meeting 
  • Jay Chu, chief of staff in the office of City Councilmember Darlene Mealy: Reminder for the monthly advisory board meeting on June 1, 10:00 a.m. at the district office at Trinity Methodist Church at Eastern Parkway and Utica; Free immigration services every Thursday 347-907—2232, if have questions.     
  • Representative from the office of City Councilmember Al Vann: Legislative update, city council passed a law prohibiting electric scooters
  • Toby Jasimi, from the office of Assemblyman Mosley: Mosley is in Albany; there will be a Men’s Health Day on June 29; Remember that the deadline for the SYEP program is on May 10, questions 718-596-0100. 
  • Joan Eastman from the office of State Senator Velmanette Montgomery: The Black engineers and Blacks in Energy are sponsoring a free engineering program at P.S 5 on Hancock between Ralph and Howard from 7/22-8/9 for 3rd -5th-graders; Also, there is a resource guide available for senior citizens, call the office at (718) 643-6140
  • Renee Collymore, District Leader (57th A.D. ): On Wednesday, May 29, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., at 444 Clinton Ave, she will hold a community forum at the Parliament Democratic Club to educate members about the roles of community board meetings. 
  • Karen Ellis, borough coordinator, at the Department of Environmental Protection. The Service Line Protection Program provides line protection for homeowners who have aging pipes or tree blockage, or just normal wear and tear issues. The cost can be 3,000 - $15,000 for a property owner, if city requires repair. The program provides service line protection that will come out and make a repair to your service line and respond in emergencies for only $3.99/mo. for water, $7.99 for sewage, and $11.98/mo. for both.   • Bridgette Jibe, representative from Chase Bank: Chase is sponsoring a free homebuyer seminar on June 11, at Chase Branch in Restoration at 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
  • Tremaine Wright, CB 3 Vice Chair: A job announcement for a district manager will soon be available on job boards online. If interested, you must respond to information on the posting. Do not call office.
  • Robert Cornegy, District Leader (56th A.D.): The Monday morning rally on the moratorium on closing of hospitals, specifically LICH, was very progressive, successful. But the community needs to continue pushing, get involved if you want to avoid closures. 
  • Representative from the Community Education Council. The Department of Education met with the CED recently. What the DOE is proposing is to un-zone all of the kindergartens, which means the process to enroll your child will require an application in  School District 16. The CEC will hold a public meeting on Monday, May 20, at 6:00 p.m., at 1010 Lafayette, please come out if you do not want this to happen! 
  • Tamecca Tillard, President of CIBS: Journal ads are available for purchase for their special breakfast saluting councilman Al Vann; Also at CIBS, they have a community-supported CSA, Nextdoorganics, so you can come by the office and pick up for a fresh bag of locally grown fruits, vegetables and other products for only $25-$50/weeks. I. PUBLIC HEARINGS

A. The Economic Development Committee held a hearing on Rick’s Lounge Inc. to request a letter of support of their application of a liquor license, located at 1557 Fulton Street. Caribbean restaurant has been around for 16 years. Open from 11:00 a.m. – 10:00; weekends until 12:00 a.m.  

B.
The Economic Development Committee held a hearing on Calaca Brooklyn’s request for a letter of support of the application of a liquor license, located at 139 Putnam Ave., a Mexican Seafood restaurant. Should be opened in about a month. Tuesday-Thursday, 4-10 p.m. and until 11:00 p.m. on the weekend.  

C.
Parks, Arts & Culture Committee will held a hearing on a request for a letter of support to co-name Nostrand Avenue between Atlantic Avenue to Fulton Street to Birdel’s Record Way; former owner Hardy Long ran one of the only businesses to exist in Bed-Stuy for more than 50 years.  

II. INFORMATIONAL PRESENTATION
A. The Education and Youth Services Committee gave a presentation regarding the Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) by the Department of Probation re: A Satellite Office called the NeON scheduled to open in June. Brent Cohen, often confused with parole corrections, but is an alternative to incarceration. So instead of going to jail, they give them an opportunity to live in the community but they remain on probation, helps with civic engagement and helping them become a productive member of society. Try to help members build on their assets and still attain their dreams.  

III. COMMITTEE UPDATES

  • Discover Bed-Stuy, is scheduled for Thurs. June 6, will be MC’d by WBLS’s Lenny Green
  • Bicycle Maps are available detailing bike lanes and safe cycling guidelines, call 212-839-7192 or email jscholvin@dot.nyc.gov; Now through June is Bike Month; Several have been calling about placements of bikes; there are two locations that have been placed in the street, are working to get those moved; pamphlets are available in the board office about the SBS routes; DOT has assigned areas for benches; there is work going on at the Franklin Avenue Shuttle to upgrade the station
  • Bicycle corrals will NOT be placed in parking areas. Butler called to have that program canceled in Bed-Stuy. But Nelson Stoute added, if you would like to have it in front of your business you could make arrangements for that.

Community Board 3 Meets the first monday of each month. The next CB3 meeting will be held on Monday, June 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the basement level of Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street.
