City Moves one Step Closer to Landmarking Bedford Historic District

The Landmarks Preservation Commission will vote on the calendaring of the proposed Bedford Historic District on May 15

Big news on the landmarking front in Bed-Stuy: After two years of meeting with Community Board 3 members, elected officials and residents, The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on May 15 will vote on the calendaring of the proposed Bedford Historic District.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission is the New York City agency that is responsible for identifying and designating the City's landmarks and the buildings in the City's historic districts. The Commission also regulates changes to designated buildings.

The Bedford Historic District includes roughly the area between Monroe and Fulton Streets north to south, and Nostrand to Marcy east to west, with some outerlying blocks extending to Bedford and Tompkins (see map).

Over the past two years, community groups, Council Member Albert Vann and other elected officials, Community Board 3 and local preservation groups have lobbied the LPC for the designation of Bedford Historic District and the Stuyvesant Heights Extension and four other proposed districts as landmark districts in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

As a result, LPC held a designation hearing for the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District Expansion on August 2, 2011 and will vote to calendar the Bedford Historic District on May 15, 2012.

"When LPC decides to 'calendar' a district, it's saying, 'Okay, this district, we're looking at designating,'" said Claudette Brady, co-founder of Bedford Stuyvesant Society for Historic Preservation. "The next step then is to set up a public hearing at LPC where everyone has a chance to speak in favor or against the designation."

After the public hearing, it could take LPC 6 months to a year to finally landmark, depend upon the size of the district and the extent of the research, Brady said.

The vote will be held Landmarks Preservation Commission, Municipal Building, 1 Centre Street, 9th fl Conference room at 10:00 p.m.
