Back In The Day

Allow yourself to experience some good ole summer fun!

The sweltering heat in New York City is causing folks to move around slowly and duck into stores or eateries in order to keep cool. Some people are choosing to stay indoors with the air conditioner blasting an arctic flow into their homes.

I had the pleasure of participating in a water fight this past weekend with some little girls and it was the best thing that I’ve done in years. After getting over the huff of being the ‘adult’ that they chose to wet and giggle about, I let myself go and starting chasing them with a hose.

I felt free and childlike for those 2+ hours that I horsed around.

I reminded me of the days when we were able to play in the open fire hydrants in Bed-Stuy (circa 198?) and followed that up with  a game of stick ball or skelly in order to dry off. Those were the days of

  • No guilt
  • No  hang ups
  • No Worry
  • No Stress

The kids enjoyed themselves and they forced the adults in tow to do the same. It was a moment of reminiscing about ‘back in the day when I was young…’ Try it and let the kid in you experience some good ole summer fun!

Absolutely, I was at a fourth of July BBQ in Bushwick where we all (adults, children and grandparents) decided to hit the Jhonny pump at about ten o'clock at night, fully clothed. It was exhilarating.

Great ideas...Skelley, stickball... Yes the current kids and the kids in us need to go back and revisit what great imaginations we had when we were young. We didn't need the internet, TV or any other degenerative instruments to have fun...We made up the games from generation to generation...How about "finder" a form of "hide and seek", or "round up" a group version..."Slapball" a variation of stickball and punchball. My favorite from very young was playing with my little green army men or my GI Joe in the dirt and mud...what a time for your imagination to run wild... Thanks Karen...
