Announcement: Hattie Carthan Farmers’ Market to Open

2011 season kicks off with healthy local food and family fitness programs

This Saturday, July 9, the Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market will open for its third season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming.

"2011 brings several new programs and initiatives at the Market," said a market representative. "Through a continued partnership with Playstreets NYC, the Market is pushing out into the streets with safe, healthy family programming including African dance, drums, children’s games, crafts, and cooking demonstrations."

The Market will continue its healthy gains through baking with whole grains at the clay oven in September, offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs and herbs by subscribing to its alternative distribution programs, The Mixed Basket Weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.

This year, the market plans to grow its youth program to empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps.

The market has added a new chicken coop and revitalized a new farm site which will help decrease the carbon footprint of the food offered by allowing the market to grow and produce more food on-site for community shoppers.
