5 Things You Should Know This Week

Savor Bed-Stuy, Mos Def at the Bklyn Museum and 500 Men Making a Difference Against Breast Cancer

"5 Things You Should Know" will jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, important meetings, free events and the hottest get-togethers in and around Bed-Stuy:

1. Alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations are suspended today, Monday, October 10, for Columbus Day. All other regulations, including parking meters, remain in effect.

2. Savor Bed-Stuy is in full effect this week. As a part of the 8th Annual Bed-Stuy Alive! week of events, and in conjunction with the Bed-Stuy Gateway and the , Savor Bed-Stuy features some of the neighborhood’s most popular, well-known mainstay food spots, along with some of its newer, lesser known yet up-and-coming cafes, restaurants, bars and watering holes. Starting Wednesday and continuing through this Friday, residents can choose from a list of dining options around the neighborhood offering discounts and specials. 3. On Thursday, October 13, at 7:00pm, the Brooklyn Museum presents Mos Def, Marcus Samuelsson, and Sanford Biggers In Conversation on Contemporary artist Sanford Biggers talks with Marcus Samuelsson, celebrity chef and owner of Harlem restaurant Red Rooster, and Mos Def, celebrated actor and hip-hop artist, about the social and political issues that inform their creative work. Q&A to follow. Tickets, which include Museum admission, are $10; $6 for members and cultural colleagues. Seating is limited, and advance ticket purchase is recommended via www.museumtix.com.

4. On Friday, October 14, BAMcafé Live All-Stars as part of BAM 150th anniversary celebration presents the Sidi Toure Trio

5. Men of Bed-Stuy, don’t forget to sign up for or support the efforts of 500 Men Making a Difference in their annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, taking place this Sunday, October 15. Step one: Go to 500 Men Making a Difference Inc's web site; Step two: Click on the big pink ribbon; Step three: Follow the steps on the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer site to register on the team if you are a man; and Step four: Donate, get donations and encourage others to donate and register. Their 2011 Goals are to register 600 Men for the walk and raise $100,000.
