5 Things You Should Know This Week

Prenatal yoga, alternate side parking reinstated and Black Friday in Bed-Stuy

1. On Monday, November 19, from 3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., at Macon Library, located at 361 Lewis Avenue, you and your young child are invited to join Mocha Moms Brooklyn in assisting Brooklyn families that have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy and the Nor'easter. This is a great opportunity for children to learn more and share their feelings about the storm. We ask that you bring at least one bag or box of supplies - but please give whatever you can. All donations will go to the Macon Library to support their efforts to assist storm victims in our borough. Special Sesame Street Episode about Hurricanes and Time to Use Paper and Crayons to Express our Thoughts about the Super-Storm. Please bring a box or bag filled with much needed coats, food, and supplies! (Please note: clothing donations will not be accepted). See you there!

2. Alternate Side Parking is back in effect in most of the city. It is suspended indefinitely in Brooklyn Community Boards 13, 15 and 18 and Queens Community Board 14 to allow for continued storm cleanup. These Community Boards include Brighton Beach, Coney Island, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend, Manhattan Beach, Canarsie, Marine Park, Mill Island, Sheepshead Bay and the Rockaways.
 
3. One of three lanes may be closed in eastbound direction to Brooklyn as needed 10 am to 3 pm weekdays. These closures are necessary to facilitate long term bridge construction activity. Off peak hour single lane closures will occur, as needed on the local streets under the bridge through 2013.
 
4. Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe, located at 1124 Bedford Avenue is starting its prenatal yoga classes this Tuesday, November 20, from 6:30 p.m. up until 8:00 p.m.. The class includes a break with some relaxing Tea! Classes are $15 per person!  Please bring your own Yoga mat with you! Please email melissa.pipsqueak@gmail.com to RSVP.

5. “I Shop Brooklyn,” kicks off on Black Friday. “I Shop Brooklyn” is a shopping campaign, in conjunction with 12 Bed-Stuy small business, that encourages residents to shop local during the holidays. The campaign runs from November 23 – December 25, beginning on Black Friday, and participating stores will offer special discounts on gift items. Each store also has agreed to gift wrap each item. And for others where items cannot be gift-wrapped, such as food items, they will offer gift certificates. Go here to see the list of participating stores in the neighborhood.
