5 Things You Should Know This Week

"5 Things You Should Know" will jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, important meetings, free events and the hottest get-togethers in and around Bed-Stuy:

1. The Workforce Workshops kick off today, Monday, October 3, (as always, the first two weeks of each month) at Restoration Plaza. Daily during the first two weeks of every month from 9:30AM – 4:00pm, Workforce Workshops for individuals who are unemployed looking for work and for those employed looking for a better job. 2. Beginning September 25 through October 30th, the Brooklyn Community Church, located at Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street, 3rd floor, will hold a series of preacher special guest appearances and gospel concerts in celebration of it 1st Anniversary. This week, on Tuesday, October 4, at 7:00pm is the Reverend Maurice Douglas; on Friday October 7, at 6:30pm is the 1st Anniversary Gospel Benefit Concert, featuring BCC and dynamic guest artists; and on Sunday, October 9, at 4:00pm is Reverend Dr. Fred Lucas, Deacon and Ministerial Ordination Service. 3. On Thursday morning, October 6th, Mil's Trills Music & Stories for children will make an exclusive one-off appearance in Bed-Stuy, bringing her original tunes, her ukulele and her special musical guests to the BRAND NEW community center for the arts, Studio 515, located at 515 DeKalb Ave off Skillman Street. Do not miss this chance to see Amelia perform up close & personal right in your backyard! 4. Beginning this weekend, the 7th Annual Bed- Stuy Alive! kicks off!!!!! Saturday, October 8: 10:00 AM: Street fair Kick-off; with community performances and awards; 12:00 PM: 5th Annual Restoration Rocks! Concert: Rock to free live sets by some of Brooklyn’s hippest bands (Fulton Street between New York and Brooklyn Avenues). On Sunday, October 9: 10:00 AM: Restoration 10K Run & Fun Walk: by many considered the warm-up to the NYC Marathon (registration at 08:00 AM); more information route etc. will follow.

5. On Saturday, October 8, from 1:00pm – 5:00pm, OUR FOLKLORE presents “Nou Renmen Ayiti” (We Love Haiti), at the Brooklyn Pubic Library’s Macon Branch, 361 Lewis Avenue. Nou Renmen Ayiti will celebrate Haiti’s accomplishments. OUR FOLKLORE is a children’s cultural arts and literacy organization dedicated to preserving the many folkoric art forms of Africa and the Caribbean. The event will include: 1:30pm, a storytelling performance; 2:00pm a picture slide lecture; 2:30pm, Rara dance and music; 3:30pm, costume design; 4:00pm, costume display and 4:20pm Rara continues.
