5 Things You Should Know This Week

A "Gathering of Waters," a jam session and Republicans head to the polls!

"5 Things You Should Know" will jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, important meetings, free events and the hottest get-togethers in and around Bed-Stuy:

1. Musicians, it’s your turn to be heard!! On Monday February 27th, Jazzy Mondays will present a jam session. That’s right! A JAM SESSION! They provide the rhythm section (piano, bass and drums), and they are inviting musicians, singers and poets, from high school through adulthood to exhibit their talents.  You can perform on your instrument of choice or you can exercise your vocal talents. If your talent is exceptional, they will offer you a gig on the spot. So spread the word to new musicians, old musicians and all in between to come out and let their voice be heard. Tenor sax legend Jeff King is the coordinator.  Please contact him at (917) 602-0895 or by email at jazzking1@optonline.net to add your name to the list.  Cover for musicians is $5 and $10 for all others.

2. Two important Republican primaries – in Arizona and Michigan – will take place this week, Tuesday, February 28. Stay tuned to see what possible new direction the race for the Republican seat will head.

3. Join Arts, Culture & Fun for a screening of More Than A Month, by Shukree Hassan Tilghman, a film from Emmy Award winning PBS series Independent Lens. The filmmaker sets off on a cross-country campaign to end Black History Month.  His tongue-in-cheek journey explores the complexity and contradictions of relegating an entire group's history to one month in a "post-racial" America. Filmmaker Shukree Hassan Tilghman will introduce the film and lead the Q&A. Tuesday, February 28, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Von King Cultural Arts Center, 679 Lafayette Avenue.

4. Bernice McFadden, author of “Gathering of Waters,” is this week’s featured writer in the Her Words as Witness speaker series. Come meet the author and join the discussion of “Gathering of Waters,” a fantastical rich text centered around the mind-numbing tragedy of the Emmitt Till Murder. Thursday, March 1, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Skylight Gallery, 1368 Fulton Street, 3rd floor.
