5 Things You Should Know This Week

A dance party, two Kanzaa festivals and alternate side parking suspensions

1. Public school students are on winter break beginning Monday, December 24 – Tuesday, January 1, 2013

2. Looking for something to do locally to get in the Christmas spirit? Check out  the Special Night Train Holiday Show and Dance Party with Wyatt Cenac on Monday, December 24, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m at Littlefield, located at 622 Degraw Street, Bklyn. To purchase tickets, go here.

3. Alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations and parking meter regulations are suspended on Tuesday, December 25 for observance of Christmas.

4. On Monday, December 24, in observance of Christmas Eve, Macon Library and a limited number of BPL locations will only open half a day from 9am-1pm. All Brooklyn libraries will be closed Christmas Day. Macon will reopen as regularly scheduled on Wednesday.  Also this week, in addition to its regularly scheduled programs, please join Macon Library for a Kwanzaa Arts & Crafts and a special screening of Molefi K. Asante's "The Black Candle" on Friday, December 28, 4:00 p.m., and its 3rd Annual Karamu! A Community Kwanzaa Celebration on Saturday, December 29, 2:00 p.m.

5. On Thursday, December 27, at 3:00 p.m., the Dweck Auditorium at Brooklyn's Central Library will hold free arts event celebrating Kwanzaa. Selections from the opera-in-progress, "Harriet Tubman, When I Crossed That Line to Freedom, will be performed. The composer of the opera, working with Brooklyn's American Opera Projects, recently received a National Endowment for the Arts award for the creation of the this opera to take place around sites of the Underground Railroad in 2013, the 100th Anniversary of the Death of Tubman.
