5 Things You Should Know This Week

The start of 2011/2012 New York City public school year, the ten-year anniversary of September 11 tragedy and an evening of dinner and theatre at Siloam Presbyterian Church

"5 Things You Should Know" will jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, important meetings, free events and the hottest get-togethers in and around Bed-Stuy:

1. Alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations and parking meter regulations are suspended today, September 5, for observance of Labor Day. You can download the 2011 alternate side parking calendar here.

2. There are several changes taking place this week during the day and evening on the A, G and M lines that run through Bedford-Stuyvesant. Please check back with Patch for the full update and announcement

3. This Thursday, September 8 is the opening of Brooklynite Gallery’s latest exhibit, “Purgatorio.” by Guy Denning. The pop-up location for this show is in Manhattan, at 368 Broadway, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Its theme corresponds with the 10-year anniversary of  he 9/11 tragedy, which is this Sunday, September 11.

4. This Thursday, September 8, will mark the first day New York City Public Schools will resume for the 2011/2012 school year. That means Tuesday and Wednesday are the last days to complete all of your school shopping.

5. This Friday, September 9, from 6:00pm – 9:pm at the , on 260 Jefferson Ave, Hope’s Alive, Inc., in association with Your Body Is a Temple Health Ministry and the Women’s Day 2011 Committee of Siloam Presbyterian Church present an evening of dinner and theatre with the play, “2 B or not 2 B.”  Through monologues, poetry, reggae, mime, praise, praise dance, modern contemporary dance and more, you will experience the explosive process of  “what WE think WE want.” This is a part of the Phoenix Chronicles 2 written by Nicole Guide of Hope's Alive. The Phoenix Chronicles are stories of Ms. Guide's spiritual journey as a person living with HIV and how her life has changed. Dinner will be provided between 6:00pm - 6:45pm. The show begins at 7:00pm. Free HIV testing will be conducted by Interfaith Medical Center from 6:00pm - 10:00pm. Ticket price: $20. For more information, call 718-789-7050 or 347-228-7916.
