1. Monday, August 15, at 7:30pm, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz welcomes jazz/hiphop/R&B superstar and actress Queen Latifah to the Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series at Wingate Field, entrances on Brooklyn Avenue between Rutland Road and Winthrop Street.

2. Monday, August 15, at 6:30pm, author Sapphire will read from her book The Kid, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed novel Push, which was adapted into the film Precious: Based on The Novel Push by Sapphire at the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. Brooklyn’s Greenlight Bookstore has partnered with the Brooklyn Public Library to host a reading from the new novel. After the reading, Sapphire will participate in a Q&A session and sign book. 3. This week is the final week to sign up for the Transformational Leadership Summit, a three-day commitment beginning August 17, through August 19, from 9:00am to 6:00pm at Restoration Plaza. The Summit is meant to bring the leaders of Bed-Stuy’s community together to greatly open up and build upon the possibilities for growth within the community. Tuition is $475. But no one will be turned away if they can’t afford it, said Schmitz. Full and partial scholarships are available. The maximum group size will be 80 people. Pre-registration forms are available. 4. The New York City Parks Department’s Outdoor Summer Movie Series presents “Madagascar,” a free viewing in Von King Park on Thursday, August 18, at 8:15pm. Von King Park is located at 670 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.

5. On Thursday, August 18, at 6:30pm, Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries will join the Rev. Clinton M. Miller, Pastor of Brown Memorial Baptist Church, Common Cause Executive Director, Susan Lerner, and film director Jeff Reichert at the screening of Mr. Reichert's critically acclaimed, Tribeca Film festival documentary, Gerrymandering: The Film. Sponsored by the Brown Community Development Corporation, the select group will hold a panel discussion following the screening. The screening will take place at Brown Memorial Baptist Church, Fellowship Hall, 52 Gates Avenue (b/t Waverly and Washington Avenues), Brooklyn
