5 Things You Should Know This Week

Bed-Stuy Live! Music Festival, Emergency Homeowners Loan Program and The Good Food Revolution

"5 Things You Should Know" will jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, important meetings, free events and the hottest get-togethers in and around Bed-Stuy:

1. Orientation for College Academy is today, Monday, July 18, from 6:30pm – 8:00pm at 257 Macon Street in Brooklyn. A Brooklyn Family Place is offering a new program open to high school juniors and seniors who are interested in going on to college.  The College Academy will offer college counseling, tutoring in core academic areas, SAT Prep, assistance with Admission and Financial Aid Applications to all participants. High school students and their parents are invited to attend! To RSVP please send email to lewis@abrooklynfamilyplace.org indicating your interest in joining the College Academy.

2. The Bed-Stuy-based Coalition for Public Education is sponsoring “Parents Taking The Lead Institute,” a parents’ institute weekly series of workshops beginning this Thursday July 21, and continuing for the next four Thursdays thereafter (July 28, August 4, 11, and 18). CPE is seeking the participation of parent leaders whose children attend Public Schools in all areas of New York City.  This year has been a year of struggle for quality education and the workshops will examine policies, school closings, budget cuts and inequities within the system of Public Education. 3. Beginning this Thursday, July 21, through Saturday, July 23, the Brooklyn Rescue Mission, brings the Good Food Revolution to Bedford-Stuyvesant. The Good Food Revolution is a three-day event, featuring Will Allen the founder and CEO of Growing Power, Inc., a national non-profit organization with a mission to provide healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food to people in all communities. Mr. Allen also is a 2008 John D. and Katherine T. McArthur Foundation Fellow; a member of the Clinton Global Initiative; and was a 2010  “Time Magazine’s 100 World’s Most Influential People” nominee. 4. The Emergency Homeowners Loan Program (EHLP). The program has set aside $112 million for New Yorkers who are in danger of foreclosure due to a loss of a job. Eligible New Yorkers will qualify for up to $50,000 in emergency federal loans to help them avoid foreclosure. The Emergency Homeowners Loan Program will be accepting applications only until Friday, July 22, so homeowners should apply now. 5. Join Brooklynites Karnage and Sanctum for a celebration of music, culture and the arts at the First Annual BedStuy Live! Music Festival, this Saturday, July 23, from 11:00am – 7:00pm at the Von King Park Amphitheater.
