5 Things You Should Know This Week

Weekday services changes on the A and G trains, Discover Bed-Stuy Day, and the start of new career training workshops at Restoration.

"5 Things You Should Know" will jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, traffic changes, important meetings and the hottest events in Bed-Stuy:

1. This upcoming Monday, June 6, at 9:30 am, Restoration’s monthly job readiness workshop series is starting again! Whether you are looking for a job in green construction or you just want to take a step up in your career, these workshop will be a great help to prepare you for your next move. The series starts with a general introduction to job readiness and an overview of the curriculum. Based on this first day, you can decide to attend the full two weeks Monday to Friday from 9:30AM to 4:00PM or pick just those days on which topics are handled that are of interest to you! Resume writing, interviewing skills, online job applications, work attitude and attire, conflict resolution at the work place, networking, and many more topics will be presented. 

2. Planned Weekday Services Changes on MTA: The A Train—Nights, 11 PM to 5 AM, Mon to Thu, Jun 6 – 9, Uptown A trains run express from 59 St to 125 St. And from 12:01 AM to 5 AM, Tue to Fri, Jun 7 – 10, Brooklyn-bound A trains run via the F line from West 4 St to Jay St-MetroTech. The G Train—Nights, 11 PM to 5 AM, Mon to Fri, Jun 6 – 10, No G trains between Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts and Church Av.; A and F trains provide alternate service via Jay St-MetroTech. And also, from 11 PM to 5 AM, Mon to Fri, Jun 6 – 10, G service operates in two sections:1. Between Court Sq and Bedford-Nostrand Avs; 2. Between Bedford-Nostrand Avs and Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts. To continue your trip, transfer at Bedford-Nostrand Avenues.

3. On Thursday, June 9, from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm is the Fifth Annual Discover Your Neighborhood Resource and Safety Expo! Thursday June 9, 2011@ Boys & Girls High School, 1700 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY. The event is FREE! The theme, “Discover Bed-Stuy” is an invitation to neighbors throughout the community to come and find out more about the many services and programs that are available right in the neighborhood. One of the most popular aspects of the Expo is the comprehensive workshop series with raffles in each workshop. The Expo will be rounded out with the popular Food Court, Kids’ Corner, and Shopping Bazaar.

4. On Saturday, June 11, 2011, Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy Presents: SOAPBOX at the Walt Whitman Theater. Soapbox is this year’s title and theme of Ifetayo’s annual spring production. The organization’s spring performance originated over 20 years ago as an opportunity for a small group of dance students to showcase their work. Today, the event reflects the talent of over 150 students, teachers, and guests in a variety of disciplines for audiences containing over 2,000 members. Ticket prices are affordable and range from $15-25.The event will take place at 7:00pm at the Walt Whitman Theater at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts. 1500 Hillel Place Brooklyn, NY, on the Brooklyn College campus.

5. The Lewis Avenue Flea Market in Bedford-Stuyvesant is in full effect, and not only is looking for participant shoppers, but also merchants/merchants. The Lewis Avenue Flea is Bed-Stuy’s first open-air market, now in its tenth season. It is open on Saturdays at the Stephen Dacatur School (MS 35), Lewis Avenue (bet. Decatur St. & MacDonough St., A-train to Utica Ave.) from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
