5 Things You Should Know This Week

Patch to launch new blog, Bloomberg release 2011-2012 budget and a Mother's Day brunch in Bed-Stuy

"5 Things You Should Know" may turn your opinion of Mondays around, with information to jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, traffic changes, important meetings and the hottest events in Bed-Stuy:

1.     On Tuesday May 3, from 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm, High Impact Alliance (HIA), an organization founded in 2009 by Boys and Girls High School, will host its second annual BGHS alumni vs. students basketball game at the Boys and Girls High School Gymnasium, located at 1700 Fulton Street in Brooklyn. The game will also serve as a fundraiser for the HIA mentoring program. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for all other attendees. Tickets are available at the door.

2.     For all you readers who insist on calling Bed-Stuy Patch a blog (it’s really not a blog; it’s a news site), well, beginning Wednesday, May 4, Patch will launch a brand-new feature called “Local Voices,” where you will get a chance to click through from the homepage to… (drumroll)… a blog! We have pulled together some of the most interesting and formidable “talkers” in Bed-Stuy who will blog about all kinds of topics of interest to you, from how to start your own backyard garden, to getting involved with landmarking, to the coolest places to hang on in the nabe that serve organic dishes. But the best part about this blog is you can talk, talk, talk to each other as much as you want, when you want. So look out for “Local Voices,” this Wednesday, and jump into the conversation!

3.     On Thursday, May 5, 2011 at noon, the mayor will release the city’s executive budget. Residents should tune in and brace themselves for 2011-2012 plan. Major cuts are expected, which will impact nearly all city services, including the Department of Education, Head Start programs, New York City fire and police departments and summer youth employment programs, to name a few.

4.     On Saturday, May 7, Solo Mommy Magazine, the monthly digital publication dedicated to empowering single moms with savvier ways to live a simpler life, will host its 5th Annual Mother's Day Brunch and honor several single moms with its coveted "You Go, Mom" award.  The event will be held at the Brown Sugar Club, located at 433 Marcus Garvey Blvd, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Tickets are $45 per person. To purchase tickets or for more information, please contact Feona Sharhann Huff of Powerhouse Media Group at (347) 386-9206 or powerhouse4ever@gmail.com.
