5 Things You Should Know This Week

A Snowplow Hearing, Kindergarten Enrollment and The Restoration Dance Theatre Company annual MLK concert, Imagine!

"5 Things You Should Know" will help take the edge off of your manic Monday by giving you information to jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, traffic changes important meetings and the hottest events in Bed-Stuy:

1.     Alternate Side Parking Rules will resume today, January 10th, through the rest of the week. Parking meters will remain in effect.

2.     Today marks the first official hearing on the city’s response to the December snowstorm and plow fiasco. The hearing will take place at Emigrant Savings Bank, 49-51 Chambers Street (between Broadway and Elk) at 11:00 am. City officials and civic leaders will testify. To ensure that everyone has enough time to speak and respond to council members' questions, they will NOT be hearing oral testimony from the public.

3.     Kindergarten admissions begins today in New York City for children who were born in 2006 and reside in NYC. Parents should visit their zoned school and other schools where their child is eligible for admission. Parents will need to submit an application, along with their child's birth certificate or passport and two proofs of residence documents. Admissions application will continue through March 4th, 2011.

4.     The deadline has been extended to January 15th for community groups and schools to apply for playstreets for outdoor recreation. This past year, playstreets were hosted next to farmers markets, schools, and other community sites and attracted hundreds of children and adults to take part in free, outdoor fitness and recreation. Playstreets are provided by NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene and Department of Transportation. 5.    The Restoration Dance Theatre Company's annual concert, IMAGINE! kicks off this Saturday, January 15th at 7:00 pm. Join the theatre company on a journey of choreographed imaginings inspired by hope, determination and vision as the company performs new works for its signature concert, in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The concert will feature some of the company’s best choreographers/mentors, including ChoreoQuest project, Obediah Wright, Karen Thornton-Daniels, Ronald K. Brown, Nathan Trice, James Atkinson, Germaul Barnes, Lindia Dugue, and Chris White aka “Sweat”, to name a few. Click here for more information.
