Brooklyn Crescents Lacrosse Club Ready To Launch 14th Season

Spring in Brooklyn means the end of cold weather and the coming of America’s favorite sport – Lacrosse; and the Brooklyn Crescents Lacrosse Club (BCLC) is ready to roll. Brooklyn’s premier youth lacrosse team is ready to kick off their 8th year.

Boys and Girls from Pre-K through 8th grade are practicing roll dodges, ground balls and lacing up the cleats once again. Coaches are looking forward to another banner year of enrollment with an estimated 300+ players on the field this Spring.

Players come from a diverse collection of neighborhoods in Brooklyn (Bedford-Stuyvesant, Park Slope, Bay Ridge, Crown Heights and the like) and also from the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

“We are based in Brooklyn but we are about the children and the game. We love the idea that we can extend our reach all over the metropolitan area and expose more players and families to the game,” says BCLC Board Member, Dan Sheff.

Once again both the boys and girls will return to the beautiful fields of Brooklyn’s Poly Prep for practices, tournaments and clinics.

“Poly Prep has been a great partner. They share not only our commitment to the game but to the fundamental principles of the Crescents: Family, Community and Team. We are more concerned about our children using lacrosse to build confidence and relationships than scoring goals. Through the Crescents, many families get exposed to the Poly Preps, The Xaverians, The Midwoods, The Lawrencevilles of the world and vice versa.  Most times, that is all you need, a platform to be great. That is our goal,” adds Board Member, Wes Jackson.

The relationship with Poly Prep is just one of the many positive  happenings with the BCLC. The team has been busy building relationships with the larger lacrosse community. BCLC President, Patrick Drennan, is on the board of the Long Island Chapter of US Lacrosse and BCLC is now partnering with Harrow Sports, Trilogy Lacrosse, the NY Lizards of the MLL, Wagner College, St. John’s University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Xaverian High School and Xavier High School

New coaches are joining the program from a host of schools including: Georgetown, Maryland, Boston University, Notre Dame, Cornell, Wesleyan and more.

What the club is most proud of is the number of Crescents Alumni excelling outside of the program. Alumnus Eoin Collins is now a junior at Mercer University, playing Division 1 Lacrosse. Three alumni, Joseph Timmons, James Angelillo and Kyle Vogel have all recently committed to Mt. St. Mary’s (NY), Saint Vincent’s College (PA), and RPI (NY), respectively, to play college ball. Alumna Anise Rau is a sophomore on the Varsity squad at Stuyvesant High School. Alumna Arnelle Williams is a senior, playing Varsity lacrosse for four years, at Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts and is eyeing Syracuse, Tufts, and Hobart & William Smith Colleges. These results are remarkable due to the limited field space in Brooklyn; the team has only been only able to practice one day a week.  That traditional practice frequency is also changing as the program has added multiple fields and multiple practices to the Spring season.
