Brooklyn Bikers Beware
I am not a die hard bicyclist in fact, I have a Citizen gathering dust behind my apartment door with that said I still would never consider riding without a helmet. The human skull is really nothing more than a candy coated shell when it comes to accidents.
In the past couple of months I've witnessed two car accidents the first involved a bicyclist who was lucky enough to walk away unscathed although he spent the next 30 minutes crossing himself and thanking his God that he was still alive. The second accident involved a car that was hit on the passenger side with such force by a taxi that it did a complete 180 and ended up bouncing off of a parked car and winding up back in the middle of the street. And like a mother hen I asked a witness where her helmet was? Well, she was only going a couple of blocks. I wonder if she realized that a couple minutes earlier and she might have been part of the melee.
Look, we've all heard and/or witnessed accidents but, the city has provided us with bike lanes, loaner bikes and there are about four bike shops in my area alone as one Brooklynite to another it's best to be safe than sorry. Trick out your helmet do whatever it takes to protect yourself and live to bike another day.
