Building Bridges

Bedford Stuyvesant youth group spend a day cleaning and greening Tompkins Avenue.

On Saturday, June 4th members of the Bridge Street Church Richard Allen Youth Council came out to clean-up and plant flowers along Tompkins Avenue.  Reverend April Breckels - Director of the Youth Council, Kenneth Mbonu - Economic Development Specialist Bridge Street Development Corporation and volunteer youth leaders from Bridge Street Church directed the kids and participate in the activities.

The young people swept sidewalks, weeded tree beds and planted containers with pink geraniums.  They also had an opportunity to meet and talk with some of the merchants.  One young lady, an aspiring designer who will be attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in the fall, received first hand advice about running a fashion business from the owners of The Meat Market and Nippy Lavern Fashions.

Later this summer the youth group will be out on Malcolm X Boulevard for another day of cleaning and greening.
