An Oasis on Nostrand Avenue

Bedford Stuyvesant's Changing Commerical Streetscape

Many merchants open businesses in Bedford Stuyvesant but, very few do anything to improve the streetscape and livability of the neighborhood.  Not so for three merchants on one block of Nostrand Avenue.

Safiya Hassan owner N-Diya Spa; Margo Lewis and Daphne Surpis owners of Ms Dahlia’s Café; and  Daphne Surpris and Emmanuel Tropnasse owners of Vodou Bar  have transformed Nostrand Avenue between Hancock and Halsey Streets into an urban oasis.   The women are proud residents of Bedford Stuyvesant and their commitment to providing their neighbors with quality goods and services is evident even before you enter the doors of their establishments.  The streetscape these merchants created is vibrant and welcoming.

Next time you walk down Nostrand Avenue don't just admire the streetscape, stop and show your appreciation by patronizing these businesses

N-Diya offers great spa services and skin and hair care products.  For a monthly membership of $49:00 you will get an hour long message which is the perfect antidote for the stressed and over-worked.  N-Diya’s hours are Tuesday to Friday 11:00AM to 7:00PM; Saturday -10:00AM to 7:00PM; and Sunday -  12:00PM to 5:00PM.

Vodou Bar is the new night time hot spot in Bedford Stuyvesant.   The cool vibe, delicious house drinks and yummy hor d’ourves make Vodou Bar the ideal place to relax and un-wind at the end of the day.   Voodou Bar‘s hours are Monday  to Wednesday  - 6:00PM to 2:00AM; Thursday and Friday - 6:00PM to 4:00AM; Saturday – 4:00PM to 4:00AM and Sunday – 4:00PM to 2:00AM.

I think Daphne Surpris is so right for this area. If we had more people like her that truly invest in Bedford Stuyvesant this area would be so prime. The top reason I support these shops because of the appearance that tells me that they care about the community.

I am so proud to say that I live in Bedstuy. I have resided on Monroe bet. Nostrand & Marcy for 40+ years and to be here to see the transformation of the empty lots becoming homes and all the business that is making Nostrand Ave so vibrant. I was on the 26 Bus when the tables were being put outside Vodou Bar. I myself would like to open a business on the Ave some day soon. I wish all the business owners much success.

I recently moved to Bedsty and I'm loving it so far. I will definitely visit the places referenced above and would encourage everyone to tell a friend about places like these. I would love to see other businesses like these in Bedsty.
