We Are a Family

In the past two years, my definition of family has grown immensely. When I was a child, family was often described as: Mother, Father, Sister, and Brother. I have now learned as an adult that there is the family you are born into and the family you create. The family you create is both communal and traditional. I do not have any biological children of my own but I have the honor of being a communal mother to so many children in Central Brooklyn and beyond. The youth we work with at DIVAS for Social Justice are also siblings to each other and often care for each other the way sisters and brothers would. All forms of family should be celebrated and be part of history through documentation. Join our organization, on November 10, 2012 in our 1st Annual, “DIVAS for Social Justice Portrait Day”. We are providing the community with the opportunity to receive a professional photography session for an affordable price with all proceeds benefitting the development of our multi-media after-school program. Come celebrate and make history by documenting your family with us. All proceeds to benefit DIVAS for Social Justice, a local neighborhood organization that empowers young women in under served communities to use technology and the arts towards social change.
