Rush Arts Gallery and Corridor Gallery are my personal favorites in the New York City area. Both Galleries provide a platform for the progressive non mainstream artist whose voice may not be heard due to the fact that they are non conformist and aren't afraid to showcase works that may make look within themselves and ask tough questions regarding the worlds "politics".
