Not Your Grandma's Papaya

A brand-new Papaya Restaurant opened in Bed-Stuy, and it's serving up some unexpected menu options.

For native New Yorkers, the word "Papaya" will just as soon evoke visions of sugary frozen drinks and cheap hotdogs on-the-fly as it will an exotic fruit.

Well, there's a new Papaya Restaurant in town, Broadway Papaya, that opened this past Saturday at 1164 Broadway in Brooklyn. But this is not your grandma's Papaya.

In fact, sugar babies and processed meat-lovers need not apply, because this Papaya caters to the health-conscious eater.

Its grand opening on April 2 in Bed-Stuy debuted over 20 different healthy food items made from all-natural products-- a novel and much needed twist on fast food.

Some of its menu items include, all-natural beef, turkey or chicken franks served on a potato bun; grilled chicken wraps and empanadas with avocado sauce; papaya smoothies and fresh, natural juices, such as peanut punch, carrot and celery juice, sea moss and protein drinks with wheatgrass and spirulina.

“Having this establishment in our community gives us the chance to participate in the health of our youth,” said Nelson Amao, who co-owns Broadway Papaya with partner Marlon Miller.

“We are excited for the opportunity to have a local business which will help support the economy and enable us to give back to our community," said Miller.

According to Broadway Papaya's press representative, Michelle McClymont, creating positive pathways for the future of the youth in the community is an important focus for Amao and Miller, and this is only the beginning of what's to come.

Stay tuned: An official restaurant and food review of Broadway Papaya is coming soon.
