Cucumber Lemonade and Green Velvet Cake

Ms. Dahlia's Cafe whips up unique, summertime treats

For those of you who walk southward on Nostrand Ave every day to catch the A or the C train, surely you've noticed Ms. Dahlia's Cafe between Hancock and Halsey Streets.

The cozy, friendly cafe has only been open two years, but already it's made quite a few friends in the neighborhood.

Now, during the summer on weekends, this cute little cafe is making it easy to try one of its unique summertime treats; It has set up a food stand right outside its door.

Actually, "making it easy," is an understatement. One look at the sweating jugs of multi-colored cold drinks and the pyramid of pretty pastries, and it's actually hard-- if not impossible-- to stop and investigate.

That big jug of green stuff? That's cucumber lemonade, and it's refreshingly sweet and tangy and delicious. Or you might want to try their pineapple lemonade or ginger ice tea, both available on the fly and perfect on a hot sunny day. $3 for a small, $4 for a large. If you're not sure which one you want, they offer samples.

Also featured is their green velvet coconut parfait for $2.50, right next to their red velvet parfait, both to-die-for and perfectly light, when the thought of heavy pastries during the summer is enough to dissuade even the most die-hard cake lover.

If a bonafide fill-me-up pastry is your preference, then try their  signature dessert, "Everything But The Kitchen Sink," a cake made of cocunut, pineapple, bananas and pecans.

All of Ms. Dahlia's baked goods are made fresh, on the premises. Nothing served is shipped in, except the ingredients. Step inside and check out the full menu, and you'll find a bevy of cold drinks, coffees, sweetened and unsweetened teas.

For breakfast they're known for their chicken and waffles, as well as their "Grand Marnier" french toast with fresh berries, along with some very yummy-sounding sandwiches, such as curried chicken salad sandwiches and tuna melts.

My personal breakfast favorite: The cheese grits with cajun shrimp, bell peppers, onions and chicken andouille sausage.

Ms. Dahlia's is located at 449 Nostrand Avenue. They're open Monday - Friday, from 7:00am - 7:00pm; Saturdays, 8:00am - 7:00pm; Sundays 9:00am - 5:00pm.
