Craft Beer Bar Opens on Tompkins Avenue

Bed-Stuy Brew's proprietor hopes to fill a void in Bed-Stuy craft beer.

In hopes of attracting Bed-Stuy beer fans, Tompkins Avenue’s two-year-old Bed-Vyne Wine has expanded with the next-door addition of Bed-Vyne Brews, a craft beer bar and retail shop.

Proprietor Michael Brooks started planning for the bar’s June 21 opening about one year ago as Bed-Vyne Wine customers and locals continued to express their frustration about going to Williamsburg, Greenpoint or Park Slope for craft beer.

“Some of the stuff I heard from customers was that we could really use a craft beer store or beer bar in the neighborhood,” Brooks said. “That developed into a new concept.”

Brooks said a lot of Brooklyn craft beer stores feel like bodegas and grocery stores, so he wanted to create a welcome space where people could sit down and have a pint. At Bed-Vyne Brew, patrons can choose from a selection of ten rotating beers on tap and enjoy a menu of snacks such as cheese spread, smashed chickpeas and roasted garlic crackers.

Because the bar is already accruing regular customers, Brooks wants to keep replacing the taps with new options from across the country.

“We’re trying to provide the experience where people can try different beer from all over the place,” Brooks said.
