Brooklyn Baby Cakes to Hold Retail Flash Mob Event

It's a one-hour cupcake-buying frenzy!

This Friday, February 15, from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Brooklyn Baby Cakes, located at 506 Nostrand Avenue, is inviting Bed-Stuy residents to take part in a one-hour retail flash mob event!

A retail flash mob is a small business campaign where business owners open their doors, slash prices for an hour, and allow the community to try their newest product or service.

For only $10, Brooklyn Baby Cakes will provide a box of cupcakes and drink specials, along with music and a chance to meet and greet the owner.

"There are many groups and organizations organizing workshops and seminars about financing, business plans, social media and other related elements. While those initiatives are important, the bottom line is businesses need money, foot traffic and people buying their products to operate," said Tywan Anthony, who works at Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation in the Financial Empowerment Center.

Anthony said he took it upon himself to organize the retail flash mob with Baby Cakes's owner Myriam Nicholas to help grow support and awareness of the bakery. Anthony's friend -- who he calls a "marketing genius"-- recently had shared the concept of retail flash mobs with him, and so Anthony proposed it to Myriam, and she agreed!

"My partner Mack Petion and I are already talking about doing more for different businesses," said Anthony. "We want retail flash mob fever all over Bed Stuy! But helping businesses stay in [the neighborhood] is number one."

So, Bed-Stuy, come out, indulge your sweet tooth while supporting a local business before these cupcakes are going, going... gone in 60 minutes!

Chris Rock said it best, African Americans are shown more 'love' for doing a 'bid' and getting outRead More of prison than to graduate school with a degree. When this 'hood mentality' starts to change, then you will see more than a trickle of AA passing advanced math courses.
