The Restoration Dance Theatre Readies for DanceAfrica

RDTC will celebrate its 15-year anniversary representing Brooklyn at BAM's DanceAfrica concert series

Memorial Day weekend is around the corner, and the Restoration Dance Theatre Company (RDTC) members are preparing for another big performance.

Every year for the past 33 years, the Brooklyn Academy of Music has proudly presented DanceAfrica, a celebration of the cultural vitality of Africa and its diaspora, featuring a handful of dance companies from around the world.

This year, RDTC will celebrate its 15-year anniversary representing Brooklyn in this highly anticipated event.

RDTC members are ambassadors for the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation Center for Arts and Culture’s Youth Arts Academy Dance Department. The company, comprised of mostly teen dancers, receives professional training, attends master classes and participates in the ChoreoQuest mentorship project working with artistic directors and/or choreographers.

RDTC trains in more than just West African dance; they also learn and perform modern, ballet and tap --  an eclectic repertoire which is presented at its annual concert and throughout the tri-state area.

The company's festival dancers, comprised of mostly children in the Youth Arts Academy who will not be performing at BAM, will give a pre-opening West African Dance concert this Saturday, 1:00 pm at Restoration Plaza, located at 1368 Fulton Street, in the outdoor amphitheater.
