'Six Draughtsmen' Draws On Nigerian Experience at MoCADA

Museum will showcase works by Nigerian women starting this week.

As a form of artistic expression, drawing is often overlooked as a stepping-stone, the first of many rungs on the ladder of arts. But with a new exhibition in Brooklyn, that might be about to change.

Opening this week at the Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts, Six Draughtsmen is an exploration of the evolution of drawing and its role in culture, particularly among African artists.

“If you pick up any book on contemporary drawing, you can easily count the number of African artists in it," said artist and curator Ruby Onyinyechi Amanze. "In Nigeria, there isn't much of a place for drawing to be recognized as art in the way painting or sculpture is, let alone contemporary or experimental drawing. I'm interested in showing the range of what contemporary drawing can be with a focus on artists of African descent."

The opening reception will take place at MoCADA on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. The exhibition will run from Oct. 24 to Jan. 19. It features the collected drawings of six Nigerian women on display.

Pieces were drawn and collected over ten months, starting in 2012, at the University of Nigeria.
