Moore opened the set, sharing a few selections of her own poetry written over her expansive and celebrated career, including one that was a dedication to Sanchez. Sanchez then shared with a captive audience her insight into the importance of literacy, words, and the sharing of stories and, most importantly, supporting the works and efforts of those who are brave enough to do so.

"Her Word As Witness: Women Writers of the African Diaspora" opened on December 1, 2011, in Restoration Plaza's Skylight Gallery, and will be on display at the gallery through March 31, 2012. The exhibit features 35 photographic portraits by Brooklyn-based photographer, Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, of some of today's most compelling writers, along with excerpts from their works.
