Literature Panel to Discuss Black Women and Media

Award-winning writers will examine how popular culture shapes the representation of black women in the media and literature

WHAT: Black Women in Media and Literature Panel

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, March 24, 5:00pm - 7:00pm, at the Skylight Gallery, Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street, 3rd fl.

WHY GO: The National Black Writers Conference, in collaboration with the Skylight Gallery and Her Word as Witness:  Portraits of Women Writers of the African Diaspora present award-winning writers on a panel, including cultural critic, journalist and scholar Joan Morgan; author and professor of African-American studies Farah Jasmine Griffin; journalist and novelist Jill Nelson; professor of journalism, essayist, and author Pamela Newkirk; and writer, freelance journalist, editor, and essayist Akiba Solomon.

They will examine  how popular culture shapes representation of Black women in the media and literature. Shani Jamila, artist, writer and journalist will moderate the panel, which will be followed by a book signing and light reception.

“As a Black woman, I take seriously the importance of affirming and celebrating other women of color, particularly in the category of literature; for too many years our stories were told in narrow ways” said Dr. Brenda Greene, director of the NBWC.

“Our lives are complicated and we need more literature and images that reflect the complexity of our lives.  We need to tell our stories from our perspectives and we must work to avoid stereotypical representations of ourselves in literature and in the media.”
