WHAT: The Grand Opening of Brooklyn Tap House Beer Garden

WHY GO: This will be Brooklyn’s largest beer garden, with more than 140 beers and serving organic fare

WHAT: The Black and Latino Filmmaker's Coalition holds press conference and wine and cheese reception

WHEN/WHERE: Friday, January 6, 6:30pm, House of Art Gallery, 373 Lewis Avenue, Bklyn,

WHY GO: The Black is Beautiful Documentary will consist of 100 Black and Latino women from around the world celebrating their natural and strong African features. Cast members, local business owners, reporters and politicians from around the tri-state area have been invited to attend this important event. The 2-part Black is Beautiful Documentary will be directed by Babatunde Odesanya, founder and CEO of the Black and Latino Filmmaker’s Coalition and will be filmed during Martin Luther King, JR. weekend, January 14,15 & 16th. This historic documentary will coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the Black is Beautiful Movement started in 1962.

WHAT: New Year’s Rally for Accountability

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, January 7, 1:00pm, Grand Army Plaza

WHY GO: Join elected officials and community leaders for a rally and press conference in improving police accountability. The rally will address alleged police involvement in gun running, planting drugs, “Stop, Question and Frisk” and racist Facebook Posts

HOW MUCH: Free

 

WHAT: Target First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum: Out and Proud

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, January 7, 5:00pm, Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway

WHY GO: The evening is a celebration of identity and the diverse achievements of the LGBTQ community in art, music, film and literature. Some of the highlights include: 
5 p.m. Music: The first openly gay indie artist to reach #1 on the MTV Music Chart, the artist Nhojj will be performing some of his best-known hits, including Adam & Steve
5:30 p.m. Film: Rent (Chris Colombus, 2005, 135mins, PG-13) Join us for a sing-a-long of the film version of the Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning musical about bohemians in the East Village of New York City struggling with life, love, and AIDS, and the impact they have on America. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m. 
6 p.m. Artist Talk: Artist Lyle Ashton Harris discusses works by himself and others in the exhibition HIDE/SEEK: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture exploring issues of identity, family, gender, masculinity, and race. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m. 
8-10 p.m. Dance Party: DJ Tikka Masala, resident DJ of two of Brooklyn's hottest queer dance parties, That's My Jam and Fresh Fridays, spins hip-hop and house music. 
HOW MUCH: Free-- Programs subject to change without notice. Some programs have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. Lines for free tickets often form thirty minutes in advance. Museum galleries are open until 11 p.m. Parking is a flat rate of $4 starting from 5 to 11 p.m. 

 

WHAT: BAMCafe Live: Eric Mongrain

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, January 7, 9:00pm, BAM Café, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Bklyn

WHY GO: According to BAM's website, "acoustic guitarist Erik Mongrain is a master of a technique he calls 'lap tapping,' which involves placing the guitar in one’s lap and playing it like a piano. The result is an arresting cascade of sounds that ranges from crystalline harmonics and chimes to crisp percussive effects, evoking a luminous, icy landscape fit for a January night."
