Dance Africa is Back!

The place to be this Memorial Day weekend!

This weekend, beginning Saturday May 25 through Memorial Day, May 27, DanceAfrica will showcase the cultural vitality of Africa and its diaspora through dance, art, film and an outdoor bazaar.

Created in 1977, DanceAfrica is BAM's longest-running cultural program and one of America's largest and most vibrant celebrations of African and African-American dance, music and culture.

This high-spirited, colorful festival and week-long celebration brings together communities from all across New York City.

Under the artistic direction of founding elder Chuck Davis, DanceAfrica features performances by traditional and contemporary dance companies from Africa and the its diaspora at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House.

This spring festival traditionally offers five dance and music performances; master classes; and the one-and-only DanceAfrica outdoor bazaar, a global marketplace for African, African-American, and Caribbean arts, crafts, and food featuring over 200 vendors and attracting up to 30,000 visitors per year.

Students of BAM/Restoration DanceAfrica Ensemble also perform.

BAM is located at 30 Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene. To purchase tickets to one of the six DanceAfrica performances or for more information on the weekend lineup, go here.
