Volunteers Brighten up Kosciusko Pool

A freshly painted pool beckons local swimmers

Fun in the sun meant more than just soaking up rays for a group of volunteers from Centerline Capital Group who spent a day of service painting the Kosciuszko Pool on Dekalb Avenue on Thursday.

About 100 volunteers spent the day enjoying themselves while beautifying the pool with fresh coats of brightly colored paint.

The volunteers are employees of Centerline Capital Group, a real estate financial and asset management company with a focus on affordable and conventional multifamily housing. The agency commits to one community service project for one full day every year.

“We do low-income housing investment work in our firm,” explained Julia Hathaway, a team leader for Centerline, as she took a break from painting. “We’re all about making a difference for other people.”

“Even the City Park staff are happy we’re here; they keep giving us water,” Hathaway added.

The project was coordinated by New York Cares, an organization that runs volunteer programs throughout the city.

Hathaway remarked that NY Cares “likes to challenge us with big projects,” such as painting the enormous pool, which was no small task. Additionally, gorgeous murals were carefully and artfully created on the outside entrance and the walls surrounding the pool.

The volunteers' contribution to Bed-Stuy will certainly make visiting Kosciuszko Pool a more enjoyable experience.

One passerby stopped to thank the volunteers and remarked that it was beautiful to see a mural being painted on Dekalb Avenue.

“Wow!” he exclaimed in awe. “We really need more of this!”
