POLL: Are You Grateful for NYC's Smoking Laws?

Study suggests city residents have lower lung cancer rates than upstate New Yorkers due to smoking prohibitions.

 

released Monday says New York City's anti-smoking measures have significantly reduced cancer rates compared to those who live in the rest of the state.

"Tobacco use is the single most important factor associated with cancer mortality," Russ Sciandra, NYS Advocacy Director, American Cancer Society of NY & NJ, said in a statement.

But while the numbers seem pretty clear-cut, not all city residents agree the laws are justified. which went into effect in February of 2011 met vocal opposition from smokers.

"I will always smoke at the beach or at the park; it's my right," Bed-Stuy resident and smoker Lexie Robinson said at the time of the open air smoking ban.

"I already have the highest rent in the country, expensive transportation, terrible bike lanes and awful garbage and snow removal, and now he wants to add no smoking outdoors?"
