Pines, Firs and Evergreens in Brooklyn

Where to Buy Your Christmas Tree Local

While prices for Christmas trees in Manhattan are reaching exorbitant heights – $150 for a six-foot tree – Brooklynites are looking for a way to get in the spirit, stay local and not go broke. There are some great places for tree shopping in Brooklyn, many of them are a short distance from Bed-Stuy.

1.  Home Depot (585 Dekalb Avenue, Bed-Stuy;  (718) 230-0833; www.homedepot.com)

A Home Depot is probably the last place you want to be on a weekend during the holiday season, but their Christmas trees are among the cheapest in Brooklyn and the most accessible to the neighborhood. Eight foot trees are as low as $40 and six foot trees start at only $35. The big drawback is they don't deliver trees bought from the store and finding a car service that will accept pine needles all over their backseat may be hard to find. It's possible to order trees off their website for about four times the price that you would pay on site, plus delivery ($190 for an eight foot tree and $120 for a six foot tree).

2.  JJ's Christmas Trees (1305 86th Street, Dyker Heights; Knapp Street and Avenue V, Sheepshead Bay; 65th Street and 4th Avenue, Bay Ridge)

This tree lot has the largest selection of Christmas trees anywhere in Brooklyn and meet the needs of everyone's budget. Eight foot trees can run as high as $150 or as little as $45, depending on what kind you want, while six foot balsam trees start as low as $35. They also have a tree trimming shop nearby, so that you can customize your tree to the exact needs of your home. The only drawback is that their locations are difficult to reach by public transport, but they do deliver once you've picked your tree.

3.  Green in Vermont (157 Montague Street at Clinton, Brooklyn Heights; Union Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, Park Slope; 326 Clinton Street at Kane, Cobble Hill; 210 Lafayette Avenue, Clinton Hill; 456 16th Street, Windsor Terrace)

This Christmas setup sells organic trees free of pesticides and has more locations in Brooklyn than any other place in the borough. They deliver for a price to be negotiated, but do free deliveries for elderly and handicapped customers. With all of their trees running $10 a foot, this is a pricier option than other spots you can find, but you're probably used to that if you buy organic regularly.

4.  Root Stock and Quade (471 Myrtle Avenue between Washington and Hall; (718) 832-1888; www.rootstockquade.com)

For those of us who don't have the room to even fit a small Christmas tree, this long-standing Clinton Hill shop has lots of goodies to help work around that. Mini poinsettias and mini potted trees start at just $6 and will last well after the holiday season ends. They also have pine garland that can be dropped anywhere in the home for $12 per yard.

5.  Unnamed Tree Lot (Myrtle Avenue between Washington and Hall)

A large, standard tree selection and huge staff on hand is what you'll find at this Clinton Hill tree outlet. In addition to arguably the cheapest trees in Brooklyn, starting at $10, they also have standard six foot trees starting at $30 and will deliver for a nominal amount. They also sell wreaths and a small assortment of other Christmas decorations.

6.  Natty Garden (609 Washington Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Dean Street; (718) 483-8833; www.nattygarden.com)

This funky plant shop sells a small but healthy assortment for Christmas trees for $8 per foot, and will also deliver to the neighborhood. They also carry herbs and a sturdy selection of plants suitable for both indoors and outdoors.

7.  The Christmas Tree Guy (150 Court Street, Cobble Hill; (917) 378-9212)

Setting up shop right in front of the CVS on the street, this guy sells a variety of smaller, three to six foot trees. Although delivery isn't an option here, the prices are very reasonable, starting at around $50 for a six foot tree. He also has a reputation for being receptive to haggling and throwing in extra gifts like a free tree stand for more pricy purchases.
