Petro Patrol

Gas prices hold steady

The once highly volatiel and fluctuating gas prices finally seem to be stabilizing. Since our last Petro Patrol ten days ago on June 6, the price of petroleum has held steady at $3.95, marking the longest period of price stasis, since our patrol first started on April 27, 2011.

However, even at $3.95, motorists feel that the price is inflated well above where it should be. Steve Doshen said that until gas falls to around $3.25 a gallon, he will not feel comfortable paying at the pump.

"It's greed," said Doshen. "That's all it is. They are paying lower per barrel of gas now then they were when it was at around $3.25 for regular, yet we the consumers are still forced to pay more. At this point, it's just greed."

Max Dominise, another patron at the pump, said, although he is happy to see the prices fall, he wants to see it drop further, to "around $2-something."

Still, although consumers are quick to complain about the high price of gas, apparently, America's dependency on it seems greater than the high price paid. According to Ram, the station manager at the BP station on Classon and Atlantic Avenues, even when gas prices where at their highest, there was no noticeable change in sales.

"They're not buying more gas, now that the prices have dropped, and they didn't buy less when the prices were high either," Ram said. "I don't see any change."
