WHAT: A.W.A Summer Salon 2012 Presents Afronomadic Music featuring Mauritanian artist Abdou Thiam and K-Sim

WHY GO: The music of the Nomadic Peoples of Africa in the vast space between the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea (Mauritania, Sudan, Senegal, Gambia, Niger, Mali)

WHAT: Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market 4th Season Opening

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, July 14, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market, Clifton Place at Marcy Avenue

WHY GO: he Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is re-opening for its fourth season of healthy food and cultural activities for every generation. The 2012 brings several new programs and initiatives at the Market.  This year the market will open its newly renovated childrens garden for tiny tots and will host a storytelling hour for young tots of the community during market days to engage and introduce our young children to healthy food and local farm culture. The market has also introduced an institutional basket program to help our institutional neighbors source locally grown food and herbs from our small farm enterprise.

WHAT: Weeksville Garden Party featuring performances by Georgia Anne Muldrow and Spoek Mathambo

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, July 14, doors open at 4:00 p.m., The Weeksville Heritage Center, 1698 Bergen Street between Buffalo and Rochester avenues

WHY GO: Genre-bending hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, musician/singer/producer Georgia Anne Muldrow will headline a free concert at Weeksville Heritage Center, an organization dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century African-American community of Weeksville on Saturday, July 14 at  6 p.m. She will be joined by frequent collaborator Dudley Perkins. South African Afro-futurist artist Spoek Mathambo will open the show.

WHAT: The opening of the brand-new Malcolm X Farmers Market

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, July 14, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Malcolm X Blvd, between Marion and Chauncey streets

WHY GO: There will be fresh breads, cakes, grains, veggies, fruits and fish. Come out and celebrate this local organic food market, in conjunction with Boulevard Eats.

WHAT: Sip N’ Shop

WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, July 15, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Therapy Wine Bar, 364 Lewis Avenue

WHY GO: In continued support of local businesses, Therapy Wine Bar has partnered with Pop Up Plus to provide an opportunity for a relaxed shopping experience for an under-served audience. Pop Up Plus, a mobile boutique retailer of clothing and accessories specializing in plus-size women is an innovator in the fashion industry. This partnership will merge the discriminating tastes of Therapy Wine Bar’s clients with a fashion retail trendsetter. “Sip N’ Shop seeks to provide a fun and engaging atmosphere and as an added benefit you can support an up and coming business.” states Angela Terry, co-owner of Therapy Wine Bar.
