Free Wi-Fi Comes to Herbert Von King Park

Mayor Bloomberg and AT&T launch free service in more than 20 parks throughout the city

Bed-Stuy residents who want to fire up their laptop away from home will no longer have to venture to their local coffee shop.

Herbert Von King Park was one of the 20 parks throughout the city selected to receive free Wi-Fi services, as part of a five-year initiative between Mayor Michael Bloomberg and AT&T Chairman CEO Randall Stephenson. The service has been launched in three parks already, with the remaining parks to have their Wi-Fi services launched at some point this summer.

“In May, we laid out a strategy to make New York City the nation’s leading digital city, and AT&T’s generous initiative to bring Wi-Fi to 20 City parks will help us get there,” said Bloomberg. “New York City has the greatest network of public parks in the world, and we’ve invested heavily to expand and enhance them. Now, thanks to the terrific corporate citizenship of AT&T, they will provide an even better experience for New Yorkers and visitors.”

The initiative from AT&T is part of Bloomberg's Road Map for the Digital City campaign that was launched last month, with the goal of making NYC the nation's leading digital city by increasing New Yorker's access to digital technology.

“Access to the internet is no longer a luxury in our society, it has often times become a necessity,” said Council Member Cabrera, who chairs the Council Technology Committee. “Internet access is a critical developmental tool for children, families, and community groups—all of whom use our city parks on a regular basis. Local residents said they were extremely happy about the new free service.

"Since it's getting so nice outside, it's a shame to have to work indoors all day," said Bed-Stuy resident and web designer Alexandra Jackson. "I'm looking forward to being able to take my computer to Von King Park and enjoy the great scenery."
