Brooklyn Community Foundation Convenes Coalition to Address Lingering Hurricane Sandy Issues

A new Brooklyn Recovery Fund Convening series promotes long-term recovery at the neighborhood level

Four months after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, New York City residents affected by the storm are finding that insurance payments are falling well short of what they need.

Victims are lining up at legal clinics in search of help for issues such as mold remediation and removal and ongoing building repairs, as banks stall in releasing payments issued by insurance companies.

To address these and other issues, on Friday, March 1, leaders from 20 community-based nonprofit organizations gathered at the Brooklyn Community Foundation’s DUMBO offices to discuss how to address long-term recovery needs in Brooklyn communities such as Canarsie, Coney Island, Gerritsen Beach, Red Hook and Sheepshead Bay.

The meeting, Brooklyn Recovery Fund Convening Series, convened organizational leaders to facilitate partnerships and eliminate the duplication of planning efforts.

Participants included representatives from organizations receiving Brooklyn Recovery Fund Community Rebuilding grants, totaling $1,345,000 to support physical improvements to homes and buildings, including the mayor's office, the office of the Brooklyn Deputy Borough President, American Red Cross of Greater New York, LISC NYC and several more.
