Urgent Brother Brown in critical condition & True South Bookstore is in danger!

Peace Bed-Stuy family and friends! My father, Brother Monroe Brown, had a severe brain aneurysm and a stroke on Sunday that has left him in critical condition.

I saw him on Saturday night when Trayvon Martin’s killer was acquitted of all charges. He wanted to sit and discuss what happened, but I was too depressed to talk about it and left early. Unfortunately, it would be the last time I saw him healthy. My family is visiting him everyday at the hospital, and we all hope he pulls through. So please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

In addition to my dad being in the hospital there’s an urgent issue with his bookstore. As a courtesy, I notified the landlord of my dad’s condition, but on Thursday he changed the locks to the bookstore without notifying me. He told me that if I didn't pack my dad’s belongings by the end of the week he would put them in storage himself. That was an empty threat, as my dad has paid July’s rent; but we still only have until the end of the month to make our transition out of the space.

As many of you know, over the years, True South Bookstore has become a mini-Black cultural institution in Bedford Stuyvesant. (Please see links below for more information on my dad and the bookstore.)  In order to pay for my dad's bills associated with his business, I am hosting a fundraiser/potluck on Wednesday, July 24th 7 PM at the bookstore. I would like to sell all of his books that are left over at this time as well. Please forward widely and help me spread the word!
