Finally!
No more schlepping bags of stinky, rotting food scraps to Ft. Greene.
You can now take your organic (organic as in living matter) food waste to the 462 Halsey Community Garden every Saturday from 9am until dusk.
What CAN you compost?
- fruit and vegetable peelings
- non greasy food scraps or leftovers
- rice, pasta, bread, cereal, etc.
- coffee grounds with filter, tea bags
- hair and nails (animal or human)
- egg and nut shells
- cut or dried flowers, houseplants, potting soil
What CAN'T you compost?
- meat
- dairy
- oily foods
- dog or cat feces, kitty litter
- coal or charcoal
- coconuts
- diseased and/or insect infested houseplants or soil
462 Halsey Community Garden is on Halsey Street between Lewis and Marcus Garvey. For information about the garden, visit http://facebook.com/462halsey
Composting helps reduce landfill waste by encouraging you to turn your food scraps into "black gold" for gardening and growing food.
It's good for the environment and good for you.

I was thrilled to find this post. However, not so thrilled when I took my food scraps over to the garden this afternoon. No one was there!
Can someone share what the protocol is or new hours of operation? I felt bummed to have saved my food for the week, carried it around, to have to place it in the garbage after all.
Much appreciated,
LelaKuti

we ask that anyone who wants to drop off, just leave it at the gate and we will take care of the rest! That way, even if we arent at the site, you can drop off at your leisure
